Care assistant

What is the role?

Working as part of a team within a residential care or nursing home, to support people  – including adults with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, dementia and other mental health conditions – with all aspects of their daily life.

Roles can range from Maternity Care Assistant, Mental Health Care Assistant, Emergency Care Assistant and Night Care Assistant. 

What might it involve?

  • Supporting people in social and physical activities
  • Booking appointments and accompanying people to them
  • Assisting with personal care, e.g. showering and dressing
  • Assisting people with eating and drinking
  • Monitoring individuals’ conditions by taking their temperature, pulse, respiration and weight
  • Possibly helping with medication
